How Does Your Garden Grow?

What Do Plants Need? When did you plant your sunflowers?

In the morning or in the afternoon?

Circle the words that describe the weather when you planted your sunflowers.  Was it…

Hot     Cold     Sunny     Cloudy     Rain     Snow

What Do Plants Need?

Plants need sunlight, water, air and nutrients (food).  Usually the nutrients are in the soil, but not always.  All plants need water, air, sunlight and nutrients to grow, but not all plants need the same amounts of each.

Why Do Plants Have Roots?

A plant’s roots help anchor it (hold it) in the ground.  The plant’s roots take up nutrients and water from the soil. What do you think would happen if a plant’s root were damaged or cut off?

Why Do Plants Have Leaves?

Leaves are very important to plants. Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves. The leaves absorb the sun’s energy. Transpiration also occurs in leaves. When this occurs more water, and nutrients, move up the stem from the plant’s roots. Can you think of a natural process that occurs to many tree’s leaves in the fall and winter? What do you think would happen if all of a plant’s leaves were damaged or cut off before it was ready to lose them?
