How Do You Say Sunflowers?

What’s in a name?

There are many different kinds of scientists.  A scientist who studies plants is called a botanist. 

 

Scientific names come from the Latin language.  The scientific name for a sunflower is Helianthus.  In Latin, Helios means sun, and anthos means flower. 

 

Many plants love being in the sun.  Some plants really need a lot of sun; others grow better with less sun.  Sunflowers need lots of sunshine.  In the morning, a sunflower faces the rising sun, and by afternoon the sunflower has turned toward the setting sun. 

 

The French word for sunflower is tournesol (Turn-i-so), which means, “turn with the sun.”
