How Do You Say Sunflowers?

What’s in a name?

There are many different kinds of scientists.  A scientist who studies plants is called a botanist. 

 

Scientific names come from the Latin language.  The scientific name for a sunflower is Helianthus.  In Latin, Helios means sun, and anthos means flower. 

 

Many plants love being in the sun.  Some plants really need a lot of sun; others grow better with less sun.  Sunflowers need lots of sunshine.  In the morning, a sunflower faces the rising sun, and by afternoon the sunflower has turned toward the setting sun. This type of movement is called PHOTOTROPISM.  

 

The French word for sunflower is tournesol (Turn-i-so), which means, “turn with the sun.”
