Show your class a variety of butterfly (and moth) wing patterns. Draw their attention to the balanced pattern on the wings. Ask your class to help you make a symmetrical pattern on the butterfly's wings. Use a variety of paired geometric shapes, including: triangles, circles, and rectangular stripes as well as pre-cut foam shapes, colored puff balls and google eyes.
After you have demonstrated the concept of symmetry, provide your class with the materials and have them create their own butterflies.
